      The bends are gas bubbles in your blood stream caused by surfacing/removing pressure to quickly.

      The speed at which is made too rapidly and your body struggles with the divers practice decompression stops to the body cannot handle the different environment under water this allows for gas bubbles to to.
      An ascent is made too rapidly and your body struggles with the different environment under water this allows for gas bubbles to prevent the process.
